The story of Spark Education Trust is one of growth, collaboration, and a steadfast commitment to educational excellence. Emerging from the union of two esteemed trusts—Vision Academy Learning Trust (VALT) and The 1590 Trust—Spark Education Trust embodies a rich legacy that continues to shape its mission today.
Vision Academy Learning Trust (VALT)
In May 2016, Vision Academy Learning Trust was founded with a clear vision: to inspire students and support their holistic development, preparing them for future challenges as individuals, professionals, and citizens. The trust began its journey with a group of schools united by this common purpose.
Over the years, VALT expanded its family to include:
- Egglescliffe School and Sixth Form College: A beacon of academic excellence and comprehensive post-16 education.
- Huntcliff School: Committed to fostering a nurturing environment for secondary education.
- Laurence Jackson School: Focused on holistic student development and community engagement.
- Chandlers Ridge Academy: Dedicated to cultivating curiosity and a love for learning in primary students.
- Junction Farm Primary School: Emphasizing foundational skills and personal growth.
- Saltburn Primary School: Encouraging creativity and critical thinking from an early age.

- Whinstone Primary School: Striving for academic excellence and personal development.
Each institution brought its unique strengths, contributing to VALT’s reputation as a trust that champions diversity in education while maintaining a unified commitment to student success.
The 1590 Trust
Established in January 2013, The 1590 Trust was built upon a foundation of strong inter-school relationships and shared educational values. Serving the Stockton-on-Tees area, the trust aimed to enhance educational outcomes through collaboration and shared resources.
The 1590 Trust’s family of schools included:
- Conyers School: With historical roots dating back to July 7, 1590, Conyers School has a longstanding tradition of academic excellence and community service.
- Bader Primary School: Named to honour a world war two hero, Bader focuses on a rich curriculum that includes local history and global awareness.
- Kirklevington Primary School: Known for its close-knit community and dedication to fostering a supportive learning environment.
- Layfield Primary School: Committed to nurturing each child’s potential through personalized learning approaches.
- Levendale Primary School: Emphasizing a balanced education that combines academics with extracurricular opportunities.
- Whitehouse: Pupils are friendly and welcoming in this inclusive school, understanding and celebrating each other’s differences.
The trust’s collaborative approach ensured that each school benefited from shared expertise and resources, leading to enriched educational experiences for all students.
A Unified Vision
Recognizing their aligned missions and the potential for greater impact through unity, VALT and The 1590 Trust embarked on a path of collaboration. This journey culminated on September 1, 2024, when the two trusts officially merged to form the Vision 1590 Academy Trust. This merger symbolized a commitment to pooling resources, expertise, and innovative practices to enhance educational opportunities across their communities.
In early 2025, to reflect a renewed mission and dynamic approach to education, the trust rebranded as Spark Education Trust. This transformation signifies a dedication to igniting potential, fostering innovation, and shaping the future of education.
Today, Spark Education Trust stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and shared vision. Rooted in a rich history, the trust continues to evolve, striving to provide transformative learning experiences that prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.
